Professional Associations
ASID - American Society of Interior Designers
An interior designer must have practiced in the field for a minimum period of time, must have completed a minimum of two years of design education and must pass the NCIDQ exam to be considered a professional interior designer. Continuing education is required to maintain the professional appellation. There are some designers that have been in the field for enough years that are grandfathered as professionals without the NCIDQ exam. Many of these designers have earned the equivalent experience through their hard work and experience.
The equivalent professional association for designers that have completed a minimum of two years of design education is IIDA – International Interior Design Association. There are other design associations that are for commercial and facilities designers.
NKBA - National Kitchen and Bath Association
Professional Designations (we will be sitting for the exams in the next two years).
AKBD - Associate Kitchen and Bath Designers
Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience. A minimum of one year must be specifically within the kitchen/bathroom industry, including but not limited to: kitchen/bath design, space planning, sales, project management, drafting, manufacturing, distribution, cabinet design, installation, decorative plumbing/hardware sales, manufacturer's rep., etc. The second year can consist of kitchen/bath industry-related experience or formal education. Related experience is defined as interior design, interior decorating, architecture, remodeling or construction. AKBDs must earn a minimum of 30 hours of NKBA education or equivalent college.
CKD/CBD Designations
CKDs and CBDs specialize in the design, planning and execution of residential kitchens and bathrooms, and prove advanced knowledge of technical and personal communication skills required to succeed as a design specialist. CKDs or CBDs must complete a minimum of seven (7) years of experience. Three years must be specifically from full-time residential kitchen/bath design experience, including design execution or project management. The remaining four years can consist of full-time kitchen/bath design, related experience, or formal education. CKDs or CBDs must also earn a minimum of 60 hours of NKBA education or equivalent college.
